Midwoof Diaries: What is a piebald Pomsky puppy?

What is “Piebald”?

From time to time, we have adorable puppies with mostly white coats and patches of color in different places on their body. These puppies always stand out because most of the Pomsky puppies we breed are solid coat colors with white markings, just the opposite. What is this color called? Well, it is not actually a color, but a coat pattern. This coat pattern is called “Piebald”. In Huskies, piebald is one of the rarest coat patterns possible, with the rarest being pure white. The piebald coat pattern is a close second. This a highly sought after coat pattern in Siberian Huskies because the markings are extremely unique and you will never see two just alike.

Why is “Piebald” considered rare?

Why is this coat pattern so rare, you may ask? Piebald is rare because both parents must carry the recessive piebald gene in order for their puppies to physically display this coat pattern.

What colors can be in the “Piebald” coat pattern?

The color patches are dependent upon what the parents carry for genetically as well. We’ve had piebald Pomsky puppies with black patches, grey patches, chocolate patches, and tan patches. Merle is also possible, but we have not had merle piebald puppies here at Smoky Mountain Pomskies. We do know of other designer dog breeders that have had merle piebalds, however. When we breed our Pomskies together, Pomsky breeders never know which genes will come together. That is one of the most exciting things for me when our Pomsky puppy litters are born! It’s like Christmas morning every birth, with a sweet new surprise every time a puppy pops out!
