How to Bell Train Your Dog

Bell Training is easy to do! With a bit of consistency and some time, you will be amazed how quickly you can teach your dog/puppy to ring a bell when they need to go out to potty.

Hang the doorbell on the door handle by the loop at the top.

HOUSEBROKEN DOGS: You have already done the hard part! The dog is potty trained, so you just need to train them to use your new system. Every time you go to let your dog outside, show them the

bell and ring it. You can even take their paw and show them to hit the bell on the way out.

PUPPY TRAINING: Before taking your puppy out, put them on a leash. They have a short attention span and the leash helps them to focus. Take them to the door, ring the bell with your finger and use a word that you plan to use consistently, every time you take the puppy out such as “Potty” “Out”, etc. Then go outside and let them go to the bathroom. Repeat this every time you take them outside.

TIPS: An eating schedule will help the potty training process. If you take the puppy out 5-20 minutes after eating, drinking, playing, or sleeping. Do not ring the bell when you take the dog/puppy outside just for play. The bell needs to only be associated with going potty.

If the dog starts to ring the bell only to go outside for play, put them on a leash at potty time and firmly say “no” when they play instead of going to the bathroom.

If you are firm, the dog will learn that the bell is only associated with potty time.
